Florbela Maria Luis Mendes
Florbela Maria Luis Mendes was born in the Alentejo region of Portugal in 1969. After spending part of her childhood in Germany, she returned to Portugal at thirteen, bringing with her a sensitivity shaped by different European cultures.
Now based in the Algarve, she works mainly in abstract painting, using spontaneity, gesture, and color as direct forms of emotional expression.
Her visual language is deeply influenced by memory, travel, and lived experience, transforming places and atmospheres into expressive abstract compositions.
She is especially drawn to large-scale works, where physical engagement with the canvas becomes central to the creative process. Her paintings are marked by earthy, vibrant tones, expressive brushwork, circular forms, and subtle geometric structures, creating works of rhythm, depth, and emotional intensity.
